Prepare two upload files: an interior manuscript containing the book’s individual pages and a separate full-cover file containing the back cover, spine, and front cover. 1. Lock the print options
Choose paperback, trim size, ink and paper before final layout. These choices affect the minimum page count, interior dimensions, margins, printing cost, spine width, and cover template. A short full-color picture book commonly needs a qualifying premium-color paperback configuration: KDP’s current table lists a 24-page minimum for many premium-color sizes, while standard-color paperbacks begin at 72 pages in the listed sizes.

2. Build the interior at the final page size
A no-bleed page is the selected trim width by trim height. If artwork reaches an edge, KDP requires the interior to be uploaded as a PDF, with 0.125 inch of bleed added at the top, bottom, and outside edge. That makes the PDF page 0.125 inch wider and 0.25 inch taller than the final trim size.
For an interior of 24–150 pages, KDP currently specifies a minimum 0.375-inch inside gutter. The minimum outside margin is 0.25 inch without bleed and 0.375 inch with bleed. Those are production minimums, not composition targets: keep text, eyes, faces, and important details comfortably farther from trim and gutter lines.
3. Check every image at its placed size
KDP requires cover and interior images to be at least 300 DPI. A file’s pixel dimensions matter together with its printed size: enlarging a small image lowers its effective resolution even if its metadata still says “300 DPI.” Check the effective resolution after cropping and scaling, and inspect fine lines, small type, texture, and dark areas at full size.
KDP also recommends flattening images to one layer. Embed every image and font, flatten transparent objects and layers, and remove hidden production items before creating the upload PDF.
4. Export a clean interior PDF
- Pages are sequential and all use the same orientation
- Full-bleed artwork reaches every required bleed edge
- No essential text or detail sits inside the trim-risk area
- Fonts and images are embedded
- Transparency and layers are flattened
- No crop marks, comments, bookmarks, annotations, placeholders, logos, or watermarks remain
- The file opens without a password or encryption
- The title shown on the book matches the title entered in KDP
Do not rely on the upload system to repair the layout. KDP’s Print Previewer may flag or attempt to adjust certain problems, but the source file should be corrected and exported again when a trim, margin, font, cover, or transparency warning appears.
5. Build the full cover last
The paperback cover is one continuous PDF containing back cover, spine, and front cover. Its width depends on trim size, page count, ink, and paper, so create it only after the interior is final. Download a current template from KDP’s cover calculator, place the design inside the template’s safe areas, then remove the template layer before export.
KDP prints spine text only on books with more than 79 pages. A typical 24- or 32-page picture book therefore needs a clean spine without text. If you do not supply a barcode, KDP can place one on the back cover; keep important art and text out of the indicated barcode area.
6. Preview and proof the physical book
Inspect every page and the entire cover in KDP Print Previewer. Check page order, blank pages, type, gutter clearance, bleed, cover alignment, barcode space, and whether any warning was automatically adjusted. Amazon also recommends ordering a proof before publication. A physical copy reveals color, contrast, paper, trimming, binding, and reading-size issues that a screen cannot settle.
Common KDP formatting problems
- Uploading two-page spreads instead of single pages
- Choosing a trim size in KDP that does not match the PDF
- Stopping full-bleed artwork at the trim line
- Placing text or faces too close to an outside edge or gutter
- Using images below 300 DPI at their final printed size
- Leaving fonts unembedded or transparency unflattened
- Building the cover before the final page count is known
- Leaving template guides, crop marks, comments, or watermarks in the upload
