Children’s book illustration may be priced per image, per spread, by the hour, or as a fixed project. One quote may deliver individual artwork. Another may include the cover, complete interior layout, typography, revisions, print-ready files, and help resolving production-file problems. Those are not the same purchase.

Four common pricing models
Per image
Each illustration has its own price. This can be easy to understand when the manuscript needs a known number of independent images. Ask whether backgrounds, extra characters, alternate sizes, revisions, and print preparation change that amount.
Per page or spread
The quote follows the book’s page plan. Confirm whether a two-page spread counts as one illustration or two, and whether text placement and typography are part of the work.
Hourly or daily
The final cost follows the time used. Ask for the expected range, what is included in that estimate, how progress is approved, and how additional time is authorized.
Fixed package
One price covers a defined result. This is easiest to compare when the package states its page limit, format, visual direction, revision boundary, deliverables, payment schedule, and exclusions in writing.
What changes the cost?
- Visual coverage: a book may use full spreads, single-page scenes, spot illustrations, repeated design elements, or a mixture.
- Characters and settings: a larger cast, crowds, detailed environments, and many recurring props require more continuity work.
- Art and production method: traditional hand-created illustration, digital drawing, collage, 3D work, and artist-directed AI workflows have different processes and costs.
- Revision terms: a quote should distinguish adjustments to the approved direction from a replacement concept or rewritten manuscript.
- Rights and permitted uses: commercial publishing permission, exclusivity, source files, merchandise, and portfolio use should be addressed explicitly.
- Book-production work: cover layout, typography, interior design, ebook preparation, and KDP file correction may be included or separately priced.

Neither model is automatically better. An author who already has a book designer may need artwork only. An author who wants one person to coordinate the finished book may prefer a complete production package.
Does a 32-page book mean 32 unique illustrations?
No fixed equation applies. Designed interior pages can use full spreads, single-page scenes, spot images, recurring decorative elements, typography-led pages, or a coordinated mixture. Ask the illustrator to confirm the planned visual coverage in writing after reviewing the manuscript. “Up to 32 designed interior pages” should not be silently interpreted as 32 unrelated full-page scenes.
Ask about rights and AI before paying
A quote should say what commercial publishing use the author receives, whether editable source files are included, and whether the artist may display approved work. If the workflow uses AI-generated or AI-assisted elements, that use should be disclosed before production and reported accurately wherever the publishing platform requires it.
Commercial permission and exclusive copyright are not the same thing. Purely AI-generated elements may not qualify for copyright protection in every jurisdiction.
